I’d like to share with you some books that have changed my life. Here is my first one – a Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff review.
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff is by Dr. Richard Carlson. The whole title including the tagline is “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff…and it’s all small stuff. ” The tagline is “simple ways to keep the little things from taking over your life.”
When I first came across this book in the bookstore I started to thumb through it much as I do with most books. While thumbing through it, I started going “Oh, I do that,” and “Oh, that’s me,” and “Wow, this is a problem I have.” I very quickly realized that this was a book that was going to have to come home with me because just flipping through it – it had that much impact.
What I love about the book is that it’s about a hundred short little chapters. Each chapter is really short, you can probably read it in about five minutes so you don’t have to worry about getting stuck halfway through the book because you know you don’t have to read through it all in one sitting. You can just read a single chapter/point and get something useful out of it right away.
When I flip through some of the topics that come across here are a few that come up:
- let go of the idea that gentle relaxed people can’t be super achievers
- remind yourself that when you die you’re in-basket won’t be empty
- let others have the glory
- learn to live in the present moment
- surrender to the fact that life isn’t fair
- once a week write a heartfelt letter
- spend a moment everyday thinking of someone to thank
- become a better listener
And so on. There are a hundred of these topics. The book gives you examples of each point and gives you techniques and coping strategies to deal with the point.
This book had a huge impact on my life. It came to me at a point when I was quite concerned about work and always anxious about thing. Is the client going to like the work? Is this marketing plan strong enough?
This book really helped me let go of all these fears and it let me disconnect from the outcomes. I was able to let go of that constant worry because worry doesn’t solve or achieve anything on its own.
I regularly pick up additional copies of this book when I find them at thrift shops to hand out to my family, friends, and clients. I highly recommend this book it’s well worth the read. If you know anybody who’s anxious or worried about things all the time Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff is a great book for them to read.
