Comet Browser Review: Time to Switch to an AI Browser?

What is Comet?

Comet is an AI-enabled Chromium browser from Perplexity, one of my favorite AI tools (see my Perplexity review here). Since Comet is a Chromium browser, Comet can use all the extensions from the Chrome Web Store. It is estimated that there are over 111,000 extensions available to Comet in the Chrome Web Store. What makes Comet different than other browsers is that it has built-in a personal AI assistant powered by Perplexity’s AI capabilities, with added layers of user control and interaction beyond just answering questions. This makes Comet fantastic for research, writing and automating tasks online. In our Comet browser review, we’ll explore the advantages of Comet’s browser and its built-in personal AI assistant.

Captain Time’s Interest in Comet

Most work is now done in browsers. Email, spreadsheets, writing, almost all of our work is now done with online versions of tools we used to have to install years ago. So our browser is now our primary productivity tool! This means we should pay more attention to which browser we use and choose the one that best suits our work and enhances our productivity.

Over the last few years, I have found that Google search results have gotten worse and worse. Google’s focus on maximizing ad revenue and inserting ads in front of search results has made the search experience annoying. I switched months ago to using Perplexity AI for my online searches, as Perplexity gives me real answers and summaries, and also shows citations so I can see the source of the information it provides and review the sources.

So when I heard Perplexity was releasing an AI-powered browser, I was eager to check it out. For the last few months, Comet has been my daily browser for everything I do.

Why A Separate Browser?

Why switch to a separate browser? Why not just use your normal browser and use Perplexity and other AI tools when you need them? What is the advantage of a “baked-in” AI assistant?

The Comet Assistant works within your online ecosystem, gathering information that isn’t open to your other AI tools because your information is behind logins and not public. The Comet assistant sits in your browser and has access to your email, CRM, email list management program, and all the other tools you use, and can work within your online tools!

Switching to Comet

As with most Chromium browsers, it is easy to switch. Just download Comet here, and then you can get started. I found it easy to import my bookmarks from my old browser, so I didn’t have to start over with my hundreds of bookmarks.

I use Comet on my Windows desktop computer, laptop, and my Android phone

Your default search will now be Perplexity, but you can change this in the settings. Since I was already using Perplexity as my default search, this works great for me.

Accessing The Comet AI Assistant

You now have two AI assistant buttons on the top right of your browser:

Voice Mode: Voice mode opens up the AI Assistant in voice mode, so you can ask your questions easily by voice using the microphone on your computer or laptop and hear the answers. Just like Star Trek! You can also launch Voice mode using [ALT] [SHIFT] [V].
Assistant Mode: The Assistant mode opens a side panel within whatever online tool or website you are using and provides you with a text or voice option to ask questions about the page you are working in. The answers in Assistant Mode will be in writing. You can launch Assistant mode using [Alt] [A]

For both of these, just click on the [x] on the edge of the Assistant panel to close the assistant.

Uses for the Comet AI Assistant

Let’s get to the heart of the matter – Comet’s AI assistant and how it can do more than your regular AI tools because the Comet browser is AI-centric. The Comet Assistant not only gives you answers like other AI chat bots, it will work right within your tools, providing analysis and even creating tasks and appointments. Here are some possible places to use Comet:

Email Use Examples

Here are some example prompts to try for your email management:

“Summarize my unread emails and highlight urgent ones.”
“Find emails from [Person] about [Project] and draft a reply.”
“Schedule a meeting with [Name] for next Tuesday at 2 PM.”
“Clean up my inbox by unsubscribing from newsletters unopened for 30 days.”
“Create a filter to filter all emails from [Name] into my [Label or folder], mark the emails as read, and skip the inbox.”

Not in this case that Comet Assistant can actually do the tasks of unsubscribing and creating email filters, not just tell you how.

CRM Examples

The CRM I use, Less Annoying CRM is fantastic, affordable, and lightweight with many great features, but doesn’t have any AI yet. I use Comet to overcome this lack. I open a contact profile in my CRM and use prompts like:

“Suggest ways I can collaborate with this contact.”
“Write a sales email to this client offering to provide professional development training for their team.”
“Draft personalized follow‑up emails based on the contact’s history, tags, and recent interactions.”

Here are some additional ideas for prompts while using Comet Assistant with your CRM.

Build a simple AI lead‑scoring model using fields you already track (source, tags, last activity, deal size) to assign a “hot–warm–cool” score and store it in your CRM.
Use AI to turn CRM notes about client challenges into blog posts, lead magnets, or webinar topics that map directly back to your pipelines.
Have AI draft campaign sequences tailored to specific CRM segments: new leads, dormant contacts, workshop attendees, referral partners, etc., then connect lists via integration tools.
Dictate voice notes into your AI and have it save them in your CRM.

Research

Here are some research idea prompts.

“Summarize this article and give me the 5 key points.”
Amazon: Go to a business book you want to know more about and ask, “Create a summary of the lessons in this business book.”
Go to CNN.com. “Find all articles on technology and provide me with a digest.”
“Find the five most recent papers on Topic X, download the abstracts, and summarize them into a bulleted list.”

Perplexity Spaces

You can use Perplexity’s Spaces feature to group together chats into a project, such as:

Themed Work Hubs: Create themed work hubs where each thread shares the same instructions, model, and sources
Knowledge Bases: Upload documents such as slides, SOPs, pdfs, for each space
Custom Instructions: Provide custom instructions for each space, in essence creating your own mini-agents
Shared Spaces: You can create shared spaces for curated resources, research, and templates
Study Spaces: Spaces for topics you are learning

Other Features

Tab Groups: While tab groups isn’t new in Comet and is available in most Chromium browsers, I find creating tab groups is a great way for me to pull together the multiple tools I need for my various work projects. Instead of naming my tab groups, I use icons to indicate what each group is for. Here are the tab groups I use:

🤖AI Tools: This tab group calls up all my AI tools so that I can choose which one to use, or to paste the same prompt into multiple AI tools. Includes:

💲Financial: This opens up tools related to the financial aspects of my business such as:

My Bank & Credit Cards
My Online Payment Systems
My Accounting App

The great thing about Tab Groups is that I only open them when I need each powerful set of tools, and the rest of the time the whole group of tools is closed and out of the way, while only 1 click away.

Comet Browser Review Conclusions

My Comet browser review and my use of Comet for these last months has taken my AI use to the next level and unlocked additional possibilities not provided by using AI in the common chatbot way. The ability for Comet Assistant to access my CRM, task management, financial, content creation and other tools has greatly added to the productivity of my work day. I highly recommend Comet.
